Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
Middle Years Update
What an incredible privilege it was to attend our Year 8 Poroporoaki last night. The MC's for the night were two stunning year 7 students who ran the evening like true professionals. Well done Ngahuia Holmes and Nia Harmer.
Hearing the children speak about their gratitude towards their kaiako, their peers and their whānau was incredibly humbling. The performance was absolutely amazing and we couldn't be prouder of the hard work they put into not only this ceremony but all they achieved as a roopu this year. Their talents shone during the entire event. A huge thank you to Whaea Jo and Matua Marcus for the incredible work you do in Hei Rima - last night it was made very clear how much the children and their whānau appreciate the tireless work you do.
Mā mahi ka ora - through hard work you will prosper.
Last weekend some of our new Year 10 leaders helped to make our MBAS van look like 'Christmas' for the Santa Parade and students enjoyed handing out lollies to our community.
Our year 9's will be back later today sharing all their stories from camp. There is a lot of finishing-up going on as well as in class celebrations of success. Next week is our final week culminating in our Learning Celebrations on Thursday the 14th. Year 7&8 Celebration will be at 11am in the hall followed by the Year 9 & 10 celebrations at 1pm.
I want to thank you all for your unwavering support this year. We are already getting geared up for next year.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and Happy Christmas.
Jenny Bloom - Deputy Principal - Middle Years

Plane Build Maiden Flight This Sunday!
This Sunday the 10th December at 10am The Mercury Bay Student Aviation Trust's latest plane is set to fly (weather dependent). We will have a crew from TVNZ covering the occasion and it would be great to have anyone with an interest in this project to come along and have a look at the planes that our school students built. Fingers crossed that we will have all 5 planes that we have built there as well. 10am this Sunday at the Mercury Bay Aero Club. Fingers crossed the weather plays it's part!
Student Art Exhibition - Saturday 9th
Starting this Saturday 9th December at 2pm is an exhibition at HotWaves Cafe in Hot Water beach of some L1 Visual Arts, L2 and 3 Painting and L3 Photography and Design students' artworks. The opening is from 2pm until 3pm this Saturday and the exhibition will remain until January 15th. Mercury Bay Art Escape and Stephenson's Pharmacy have sponsored the exhibition.
Y1-2 Athletics
Year 1/2 Athletics was an array of colour and enthusiasm and the sun finally came out! The children had a taster of long jump, high jump, shot put, sack races, 60 & 100mtr races and a good old tug o war. Thanks to the teachers who have put the time in to mastering the skills of athletics.
Tainui were the winners on the day.
Total points for the day were:
Tainui 183
Buffalo 176
Matahaourua 169
Mercury 135
M6 - Science
Another amazing opportunity for our tamariki. Today we headed across to our schools science lab. M6 got to experience what it is like for our senior scientists.
We learnt about light and reflections also about different mirrors and how an image can be altered.
Thank you Mr Fairweather for taking time out to set this all up for us, we appreciate you.
Room 32 - Reading Celebration
Pizza day today to celebrate our reading this year. A special thanks to my coworker at the Pizzaria, Jeni, who was on the oven and remembering to get the pizzas out.
Our class superstars were working on their gratitude writing and then had activities on the computer until it was their turn to cook or eat!
Hei 7 - Wire Sculpture
Hei 7 students have been experimenting with designing and creating sculpture with wire.
They have persevered and achieved some beautiful visual art.
International Students Programme
Last week of the International Students programme 27th November to 3rd December. On Monday the students travelled to Hahei and Hot Water Beach for the day with Mr Irwin and Mr Wilson, where they were lucky enough to see some dolphins. On Wednesday they travelled to Pauanui, via the ferry from Tairua, for a day of hiking around and up to the top of Mount Pauanui with Mrs Hutt and Mr Adams. Thursday they had a pancake breakfast at ESPY courtesy of The Informer and were accompanied by Mr Dunn, Mr Wikinson and Mrs Wilson. A big thank you to Pauline Stewart for organising this. In the afternoon they had a BBQ lunch at Buffalo Beach, thanks to Arthur and the team at Whitianga Butchery for the sausages and to Fabian Roberts at CFM for organising this.
On Sunday they had one last hurrah and had a swim courtesy of The Lost Spring. A big thanks to Alan Hopping for arranging this. It was a busy but fun filled last week in a month of activities for the International students at MBAS. Last but not least a big shout out to Sharon Porteous for all the hard work putting together a successful end of year program for these students, it is much appreciated by the students.
International Students and Diving
Over the course of the year several of the International Students have been involved in the Marine Academy program offered in association with Dive Zone. Here the International Students have been involved in gaining various PADI dive certifications alongside local Mercury Bay Area School students. The program involves students learning the theory around diving and various practical activities in pools and open water diving from the shore and from boats. This program has been very successful and is a major drawcard for International Students to come and study at MBAS. We have had students from Germany, Austria and Switzerland take part in the course over the past year. Special mention goes to Dorian Ramos from Switzerland who has gained his PADI Master Diver Certification, a Major achievement for him. A special thank you goes out to Darrell Bird and his team at Dive Zone for making these courses possible.
Sports Roundup
Whangamata Sports Exchange
A huge thanks to the many hours of coaching from our Teachers that went into our year 7-10 students who attended the annual Whangamata Sports Exchange last Friday. It was a magnificent day and our team came victorious winning 8 of the 12 games played. Games on offer were Touch, Volleyball and Softball. Our girls 7/8 team won all of their games. Next year we host the annual event at home. One thing can be assured we will have our field sprayed for prickles unlike Whangamata's home grown advantage!
Condor's National Rugby
Well done to our PE Teacher Nico Fox who was one of the referee's officating at the recent Condor's National Rugby 7's Tournament.
