Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
Senior Student Leaders
Welcome to 2024 from this year's senior leaders!!
We hope everyone had an amazing summer break and has had a great start to the school year so far. It's been a busy start to the year as we all settle into our new routines and classes, and get all set up for a great year of learning in 2024.
This year has started off strong with Y9-13 swimming sports at the beginning of this week. We all had so much fun and wanted to say a big thank you and congratulations to all those who got involved and showed their support as well as all of the helpers on the day. It was so good to see everyone dressed in their house colours showing support for those swimming. We’ve got even more fun coming up next week with Across the River Swim on Thursday followed by Athletics day the following week. Make sure to keep getting involved in these sports days and showing your support by wearing your house colours!!
As Senior Leaders we are going to be running lunchtime activities for Yr 7-13s throughout the year starting next week. We think this is a great opportunity to get everyone participating and having lots of fun during lunchtimes. Activities will run every lunchtime from Tuesday-Friday. Look out for posters around the school for more details on what activities will be running when and where. There may be prizes and house points given out to those getting involved and showing our KAURI values so we look forward to seeing you all there!!

Y9-13 Swimming Sports
Fantastic numbers at the pool for the Year 9-13 Swimming sports on Monday, well done to all of those who came to school and had a great time. Mercury was the winner on our first sporting event of 2024 with final results:
Room 22 - Library Time
The tamariki of ruma 22 have been enjoying our library visits. We have learned library etiquette, quiet voices and walking feet. Being a respectful audience when Stu reads to us which is one of our Kauri values. We learn so many foundational skills when we are read to: rhyming, prediction, characters and settings, recognising familiar sounds, letters and words are a few. Most importantly reading is fun and enjoyable a lovely time to share with one another .
M9 - Nature Portraits
We had some fun collecting and creating portraits with our buddies this week. We collected items from nature and spent time creating lovely pictures.
Room 32 - Art and Writing
In Room 32 we have been writing about ourselves in different ways and this week have published our favourite piece to share with others. We have also been drawing portraits and these are inspired by Picasso and the NZ artist Darcey Nicholas. Pop over to Room 32 in Primary if you wish to see some more of our learning. We hope you enjoy our mahi.
Basketball Coaches, Managers and Drivers
Basketball Season is not too far away and will tip off in Term 2. This is for Secondary School students Year 9-13. This involves travelling but with home games as well.

Y9 HEEADSSS Assessment 2024
Tēnā koutou parents/guardians/caregivers and students,
Mercury Bay Area School has an agreement with Pinnacle and Te Whatu Ora Waikato to provide free nursing services on site. As school nurses, the health and wellbeing of your child at school is really important to us. The main aim of our clinic is to improve the health of our students so they can learn and thrive within the school environment.
As part of this, the school nurse, Sharon (Shaz) Iseli, will complete a thorough wellbeing review for all consenting Year 9 students. This wellbeing review uses the HEEADSSS (home, education, exercise/activities/diet, drugs, sexuality, self-harm, safety) assessment.
HEEADDSSS assessment is a holistic tool recognised and used with young people within health settings worldwide. It supports the building of a thorough health plan in collaboration with your child. You can read more about this on the Starship NZ website: https://starship.org.nz/guidelines/adolescent-consultation
This wellbeing review is likely to take 30-60 minutes and a referral to other services will be available where needed. It will take place during the school day and there is no cost for the service. You are welcome to attend the review with your child if you wish to.
Please note, hearing and vision testing, which is carried out by Te Whatu Ora, will take place on 21st February.
If you have any questions, or if you do not consent to your child having this wellbeing review, please contact the school nurse (details below) or the school office.
