Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
Kia ora
As we reach the midpoint of this term, I am pleased to share some updates and insights into the ongoing happenings at Mercury Bay Area School. It has been a busy and productive time for everyone, and we are excited about the achievements and growth we have witnessed.
Academic Excellence:
We continue to encourage our students to excel academically, with dedication and hard work. We applaud the efforts of both our teachers and students for their commitment to learning. With upcoming and current developments in NCEA,I am happy to announce a very successful foray into our first students sitting the Common Assessment Activity (CAA) exams for Literacy reading and writing and Numeracy.
Extracurricular Activities:
Beyond the classroom, our extracurricular activities are in full swing. We have had a fantastic school spirit week with Students and Staff putting in a real effort. I know for some students this relies heavily on some very creative Parental and Wahanau input so I would also like to acknowledge your efforts in this space.
The fact that this week culminates in Daffodil day where we contribute our efforts to such a good cause speaks volumes of the character of our Kura.
I encourage you to stay informed about the various activities available and to support your children's involvement in these enriching experiences.
Parent-Teacher Collaboration:
Effective communication between school and home is vital for a successful education. We appreciate the active participation of parents and guardians in our various Student led conferences and meetings. Your involvement plays a crucial role in your child's academic progress and overall development. I encourage you to reach out if you have any queries regarding your Child's education.
Upcoming Events:
As we look ahead, there are several exciting events on the horizon:
Career Expo: We are hosting a careers expo here on site to help students explore their future paths. Professionals from various fields will provide insights into different career options, guiding students toward informed decisions.
Gratitude:
I extend my gratitude to the entire school community – teachers, students, parents, whanau and support staff – for their dedication and commitment. Together, we are creating an environment where learning flourishes and character is nurtured.
As always, I remain open to feedback and suggestions as we strive for continuous improvement. Feel free to take up my offer of sitting down and having a discussion.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Warm regards,
Ross Dunn

Spirit Week and Shave for a Cure 2023
This past week at school has been Spirit Week. It has been so awesome to see students dressed in super creative outfits! Shout out to the teachers and Mr Dunn for getting involved, it was so cool to see. The winners from each day have received tuck shop vouchers. Other students who participated and got into the school spirit received lollies as well as house points. The winners from these days were Ben Warwood, Violet Robinson, Toby Whiting and Cerys Green.
Friday was Daffodil day with Shave for a Cure happening at lunch time. Congratulations to the people who participated in shaving and donating their hair! Josie Fairweather, Clinton Raynel, Hazel Whitford, Carla Burkhard, Mila Smith de Zeeuw, Joshua Bruce, Taylor Davis, Sidney Savage, Mateo Niclas and Deryn Singh. As a school we raised over $600 for Shave for a Cure and $500 for the Cancer Society. Thanks to everyone for donating and to Stilo and All About Whitanga for supporting us!

Term 3 Full School Assembly
In this term's whole school assembly we got to acknowledge the students participating in the Wero Maths Challenge representing Mercury Bay Area school in this nationwide competition. A portion of the year 10’s this year participated in a NCEA exam in Term 2 for either Numeracy, Literacy, or both. The students got their results on Monday and were celebrated with a certificate at the assembly. We also got to celebrate Tom Lamason becoming a year 10 leader. He got there through hard work and helping his teachers and peers. We had our musical guests, a middle school band called Prisoners of War who played. Matua Nico announced a new trophy, Students vs Staff where the Year 12 & 13 P.E students will have the opportunity to go against the staff in a sports competition.

Room 23 - Conservation Week
This week is conservation week. On Tuesday for writing, we read a story called, A Place for Plastic. It was about rubbish and ocean pollution. Our sentence starter for writing was, “I will look after the ocean by…” We had some great ideas and sentences.
“I will look after the ocean by picking up rubbish.”
“I will look after the ocean by going to find a trail of rubbish.”
“I will look after the ocean by recycling at home.”
So many ways to look after our ocean!

Y12 Outdoor Ed - Rotorua
Both Yr12 OED classes recently went to Rotorua where we had the opportunity to do some Mountain Biking in the Whakarewarewa Forest (Redwoods) and some white water rafting on the Kaituna river. The purpose of this trip was to learn about risk management. In class students had been learning about what risk is and how it is created. Throughout our 3 days in Rotorua students had to apply chosen risk management strategies to help mitigate identified risks.
Students had a great time and represented MBAS with pride. A huge thank you to our parent helpers who came along - Leanne Quest and Graham Morcom. Without the support of our whānau these trips would not be possible.
Y12/13 Tourism Trip
This year our Y12/13 Tourism Class travelled to Rotorua and Ohakune. We were very excited to learn how the Tourism Heart of Aotearoa (Rotorua) functions and what activities they offer. We started with the infamous luge. This was an absolute blast; our students had much to learn from this brilliant business. On Tuesday we then went to Motion Entertainment, Rotorua. We were lucky enough to have a tourism presentation run by Ryan Holmes and his team. We were informed of all the different processes that go on behind the scenes of running such a large tourism business like this. Ryan explained the impact Covid had on tourism as a whole and what extent they went to, to gain back customers and support from the community.
Wednesday, we travelled through Taupo, stopped to play mini golf, as well as tried our luck with the Hole in One, Taupo. Thursday we planned to go skiing but sadly the mountain was closed. We still tried our luck to drive up and look at the mountain, when it started snowing. This was some students' first time experiencing the snow. We went to visit the Army Museum, and learnt a large amount about our country’s history, and how this business gets to share that history with people passing through Waiouru. Driving back we stopped by the Tangiwai Railway disaster memorial and read about the incident. This was an eye-opening thing to see as many hadn’t heard about it before. Shortly after, we enjoyed our last activity at Clip n Climb. It was nice to experience another business in the tourism industry and learn how to operate and deal with customers. We ended our last day with a lovely dinner together and a quiz night- where the Teachers won.

Good luck to the Juniors for finals day in Te Aroha. Live stream link will be emailed to the MBAS school Facebook page.
Y3-8 Cross Country
What a spectacular array of colour on the coast for our Year 3-8 Cross Country. There were a couple of interesting costumes due to the character day clash but the sun shone and the kids ran and our country friends Whenuakite Primary joined us for the event.
This event allows us to select our Peninsula Central Team who will compete at the TVP Cross Country in Ngatea on the 29 August.
Top 6 runners will go through that are 8-12 years old.
Full results can be found here.

Nurses Notes
Hi Everyone,
School nurse Shaz here, hope everyone is doing well and getting back to some normality after the last crazy few years.
Sadly, due to covid lots of routine important health stuff got missed. One of these things was general immunisations that are usually given in Year 7 and 8. Many students may have missed out.
We are seeing outbreaks of some of these serious diseases which are preventable through immunisation.
All Year 7 and 8 students should have had -
x1 Boostrix (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Whooping cough)
X2 MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)
X2 HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)
If you would like me to check if your young person has had these please send me an email sharon.iseli@pinnacle.health.nz or nurse@mbas.ac.nz or contact me on 027 327 3945 if you have any questions.
These are all FREE as catch-up doses at your medical practice. The public health nurse will also be visiting later this year and may be able to offer catch-up immunisations. PLEASE NOTE – ALL IMMUNISATIONS GIVEN AT SCHOOL BY THE PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE REQUIRE PARENTAL CONSENT FORMS COMPLETED.
Ngā mihi, with kind regards
