Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
Recognition Assembly
On Tuesday morning we held our first whole school assembly in the gym. We recognised students for their service to our community and our kura as well as recognising student success in gaining qualifications with endorsements. This year along with certificates we have introduced school badges that recognise achievement and service.
The assembly was opened by Joshua Bruce leading with an opening karakia, before Francie Lidgard sang the National anthem.
Mr Dunn addressed the school and shared a whakatauki - Ma te Huruhuru, Ka Rere te Manu - Adorn the bird with feathers so it may fly. The perfect metaphor about birds adding new feathers to enable them to soar to new heights and destinations and that the assembly was celebrating the addition of new "feathers" on our students.
Mrs Berry introduced this year's road patrol team, who serve our community every morning and afternoon ensuring that our students get to and from school safely. They each received a Road Patrol badge. Ms Matchett presented the Year 6 leaders with their school emblem badge and a leadership bar. Mr Davy and Ms Mahon presented the Year 10 leaders with their school emblem badge and leadership bar and Mr Hutt and Ms Holmes presented the senior student leadership team with their badges including a badge that recognises their portfolio responsibilities.
We also recognised all of our senior students who achieved NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 with an endorsement at Merit or Excellence in 2023. The achievements were read by Mr Lidgard, Mr Hutt and Ms Evans. Mr Dunn presented certificates to each of these successful students and Excellence endorsement badges to those Year 12 and 13 students who had endorsed with Excellence.

Student Drivers Licence Rules
We are noticing that some of our senior students are not legally following their license rules at the moment.
The law around this is designed to keep you safe while you’re still learning.
There are some conditions you must follow while on your restricted licence:
- Between 5am and 10pm you can drive on your own.
- Between 10pm and 5am you can only drive if you have a supervisor in the front passenger seat.
- If you’re driving without a supervisor, you can only take a passenger if they are:
- Your spouse or partner (for example the person you live with as if you’re married or in a civil union)
- A child who is financially dependent on you or your spouse (for example you’re their parent or guardian) and who normally resides with you or your spouse
- Your parent or guardian
- Relatives that live with you and are on a social security benefit
- Someone you look after as their primary caregiver
Y3-6 Swimming Sports
The water started off very chilly and was not for the faint hearted but after a few events and some very loud chants our Y3-6 Swimming sports had all the action.
Big thanks to Mrs Bevan who was a superstar keeping all our swimmers safe.

Room 30 - Writing
Starting our narrative writing this morning! We are bursting with ideas and learning to structure our stories by adding in plot twists! After marking the writing samples last week I am excited to see their language and creativity blossom with our fairytale genre this week.
Room 31 - Art
Amazing sunflower sketches by the Room 31 tamariki.
Room 33 - Sewing
Our students have been enjoying sewing this week! We have even had a few completed pieces.
Year 7 and 8 Snorkelling
This term all six of the year 7 and 8 classes have been learning to snorkel in the school pool.
Over the last two weeks the classes buddied up to snorkel off Hahei Beach.
The students practised their snorkelling skills and saw Eagle rays, stingrays, crabs, squid, octopus, crayfish, sponges, kelp and a variety of fish.
A huge thank you to all the wonderful parents who provided snorkelling equipment, transport, beach support and snorkeled with the students.
We are all extremely grateful.
Robyn Fotheringham on behalf of all the year 7 and 8 students and staff.
Bay Bling Academy
Bay Bling Academy were very lucky to have Sandra Hosking from Sunflower Glass Studios come to visit. Sandra brought all sorts of goodies for the class and taught the students how to make earrings, key rings, bracelets and necklaces. The students all walked away with some beautiful pieces!
Hockey Big Days Out
On Monday our group took off bright and early for a day of Hockey at the Ngatea turf. Hockey Big Day's Out gives students the chance to have a go at this fun game.
Ryder Weir was chosen by some Hockey superstars for showing great sportsmanship and kindness and was presented with a NZ Hockey shirt.
Everyone really enjoyed the experience.
TVSS Athletics Paeroa
We had a fantastic campaign at the TVSS Athletics day in Paeroa. The students placed really well in most events. All these Athletes will now head to the Waibop Athletics Champs in Tauranga.

Nurse's Notes
Hi Beautiful Young People – Why is sleep so important for you?
I have noticed lots of people who are tired and lacking in sleep and this makes school really difficult.
Not enough or poor quality sleep can have a negative effect on behaviour, learning, health, wellbeing and weight. It can make us feel grumpy and disconnected.
Young people need 8-10 hours’ sleep every night. And this needs to be good quality sleep. This is a time when your brain is developing and sleep is super important.
Tips for good sleep –
* GET OFF YOUR DEVICE AN HOUR BEFORE BED – Avoid screens, gaming, TV an hour before bed time
* KEEP YOUR DEVICE OUT OF YOUR ROOM AT NIGHT – good time to recharge it in the kitchen and don’t get upset if your parents turn of the WIFI at night – suck it up - this is for you, so you will have a better day tomorrow
* IF YOU HAVE BEEN GOING TO BED TOO LATE, GRADUALLY CHANGE THIS BY GOING TO BED 30 MINS EARLIER AND GETTING UP 30 MINS EARLIER
* AVOID HEAVY MEALS 1-2 HOURS BEFORE BED
* DO QUIET ACTIVITIES BEFORE GOING TO BED – read, have a relaxing shower, listen to some chilled music
* BE ACTIVE TRHOUGHOUT THE DAY – GET OUTSIDE – burn some energy so you feel tired at night
* AVOID CAFFEINATED DRINKS LIKE COFFEE TEA AND ENERGY DRINKS – these are a stimulant and will keep you awake
* DO HOWEWORK EARLIER IN THE DAY, NOT JUST BEFORE YOU GO TO BED
* TRY TO MAKE A WARM, DARK, QUIET SLEEPING AREA
* IF YOU CONTINUE TO SUFFER FROM POOR SLEEP SEE YOUR DOCTOR
PLEASE THOSE CARING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE – TURN OFF THE WIFI AT NIGHT – EVERYONE WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS IN THE LONG RUN
Thanks and have a great week
