Senior Students Update
Over the past week students have demonstrated their amazing talents and participated in awesome events. Week 6 has seen the Year 13 Outdoor Ed class complete an awesome tramp as well as the tough guy and gal challenge in Rotorua. Senior students have been working hard in class preparing themselves for their upcoming benchmark exams and final internals. On Wednesday and Thursday evening the charity concert showcased the awesome musical talent we have within our Kura. Keep an eye out for some photos next week.
Quiz Night - Next Week!
Only one week to go until Whitianga's inaugural Mercury Bay Area School Quiz Night!!
This promises to be a fantastic night hosted by the charismatic and always funny Fabian Roberts! Some fantastic prizes are coming in as well as some incredible items listed as part of our silent auction and raffles.
Both single and table tickets can be purchased both online and at the school office.
Also we are still in need of parent helpers, both on the day and throughout the evening. This is a great opportunity to meet other parents, get involved with the kura and help to raise money for resources that will benefit our kids and their learning journey at Mercury Bay Area School!
Please email Kathy on kathy@moylowconsulting.co.nz to find out how you can help!

13 Outdoor Education - Rotorua Trip
The Year 13 Outdoor Ed class met early Monday morning, heading off to Lake Tarawera to complete a 15km tramp through some of the country's toughest terrain. Students persevered through steep inclines and subpar weather, however they were rewarded when they got to camp at a Hot Water Beach and bathe in the natural hot pools beside the lake. Tuesday was a relaxing day for the class where they got to take a boat ride over Lake Tarawera. Everyone's bodies were nice and rested for Wednesday where the class got to participate in the tough guy and gal challenge. This was an awesome event that the students thoroughly enjoyed and came away with big smiles and mud EVERYWHERE!! This trip couldn’t be done without the awesome teachers Nico Fox, Sean Butler, and Hugh Fairweather that supported us throughout the trip.
M7 Lemon Experiments
M7 carried out experiments with lemons. We learnt about simple circuits and how electricity moves around the circuit to power things in our home. We made a circuit using batteries, wires and a bulb. We tried to see if we could use a lemon instead of a battery. We concluded that battery's work best for powering lights and lemons are better to eat.

Year 7/8 Boys Tackle Rugby Day
What a day it was on Wednesday in Whiti City for our Year 7/8 Boys Tackle Tournament.
11 passionate teams all gunning to be crowned the 2023 Tackle Champion. Some awesome skills were put on display by all the boys and some unreal games of footy played.
This tournament we decided to run a new system of scoring. This was to allow all teams to play 5 games over the day instead of being knocked out of semis and finals with only 2-3 games played.
The scoring system worked off a round robin type format where the team with the highest points at the final whistle was crowned Champions. The points worked off the try’s scored being your total points for your team, we had also added in a referees score. The referees score was to help referees during the game to stop sideline and player abuse, allowing for the refs to have a positive and great experience when refereeing a game.
This score is given to the teams between 0,1,2, these points are extra points added in to your over all score after each game.
They are rated off
- Sportsmanship on and off the field
- Sideline and supporters behaviour
- Behaviour on the field
We saw this as a huge success on Wednesday and will be working with all junior rugby, building towards next season and implementing this new scoring system into next year.
