Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
Senior Students Update
Kia ora koutou,
We have had a fantastic start to Term 2, with last week being Aotearoa Bullying Free Week. On Friday our kura had lots of fun doing Pink Shirt day and it was awesome seeing everybody dressed up in all of their pink clothes and accessories in support. At lunch time our kura got together to decorate our court with bright and colourful chalk drawings. It was amazing to see everybody's positive participation. Kia Kaha!
This year our Senior Students Leadership Team is aiming to spread kindness throughout our kura. One addition we have made is placing kindness boxes in the year 11-13 kauri classes. Last week each homeroom was tasked with decorating their boxes in a way that was personal to their class. On Friday, there was a competition to see what class had decorated their box the best. Congratulations to the winners, Kauri Group 13BSE. The purpose of these boxes is to spread kindness by encouraging students to acknowledge their peers' kind acts. Students can write down someone's name and something kind that that person did and place it in their kindness box. Then, every second week the senior leaders collect all of these names and draw one out. That person then wins a prize. Remember, it is Kool to be Kind!!
MBAS Uniform
As winter has hit we have more non uniform items coming into school. I would also like to clarify that the Black Marine Academy and Rugby Club Jackets are not part of our school uniform. If you need more clarification look at our website for what is acceptable uniform under our school policy. We have a well stocked uniform shop on site. Contact the front office if you require more information.

M1 - Science Fun
Wibbly, wobbly fun or science? On Wednesday we looked at the science behind jelly - what jelly is made of and why it sets so wobbly. We learned that jelly is made of gelatine, which is a form of collagen, and a protein. When we add hot water to the jelly crystals, it disrupts the bonds holding the collagen strands together. When the solution cools, the collagen strands reform, trapping water molecules inside. We also made vegan jelly, which uses a plant based product that behaves in a very similar way to traditional jelly. What surprised us? The vegan jelly began to set much earlier than the gelatine based jelly. Tune in tomorrow for the jelly taste test!
M10 - A Visit from Mr Dunn
Mr Dunn came in to visit M10 on Tuesday. He brought in his 2 truths and a lie inspired by the tuhituhi we did in wiki 1. It was tricky to guess which were the factual ones.
Room 32 - Netball and Football
Thursday afternoon we joined the other two year 5 classes for netball and football. We were fortunate to have Libby and Louis from Year 8 join us and teach us some new skills.
At netball Libby taught us how to catch and pass a chest pass, pivot on one foot, intercept a ball and shoot goals.
Y7/8 Wood Technology
In Y7/8 Wood technology, students have been designing and building their own media device holder and passive speaker. Their design had to incorporate a shape and hot poker design which reflects their culture. Here are some of the creations from FOR.
Pink Shirt Day
Thank you to everyone who dressed up in pink shirts for Pink-Shirt Day last Friday! It was awesome to see everyone getting involved in supporting such an important cause. The senior leaders organised chalk art at lunch time, where students were able to draw pictures, or write words that encouraged kindness throughout our Kura. Congratulations to Briar, Charlotte, and Harlem from 9SRE for winning the best Kindness chalk art, and to DJ (9SRE) for winning the best Pink-Shirt Day outfit! We would also like to congratulate 13 BSE for winning the senior KG Kindness Box competition, with a special mention to Siobhan for all the hard work she put into decorating her class's box.
Thames Valley Rugby Tackle Day
38 Teams gathered at Rhodes Park in Thames for the annual year 5-8 Boys Tackle Day. Mercury Bay entered 3 boys teams 1 x Year 5/6 & 2 x Year 7/8. This year the team scoring the most tries over the day was the winner with no finals. Each team had a few wins and some losses. Our boys enjoyed their day of rugby with a couple of them winning tickets to the double header of Thames Valley Swampfoxes v King Country & Chiefs v Hurricanes by displaying some pretty sharp dance moves in a dance off. It's not always about the rugby!
Year 7/8 Team - Patrick White, Toby McLean, Ryder Goodall, Lachie Mikkelson, Sol Kurth, Barnaby Roche, Arter Pletts, Daniel Loumoli
Year 7/8 Team - Marlon Stanley, Rueben Percival, Liam Ramage, Ollie Mita, Lucian Weir, Phoenix Kurth, Jaxson Sargent, Lachie Pederson
Year 5/6 Team & ring-ins - Dylan Castle, Devangh Davies, Shem McDonald, Ryder Weir, Blake McDonald, Johnathan Herbert, Damen Davies
Flynn Simpson - MMA
Flynn Simpson Year 13 Student who is into Mixed Martial Arts won his kickboxing fight on the weekend up in Auckland. Well done Flynn, awesome work.
Flynn has been training for both kickboxing and jiu jitsu for 4 years with his coaches Bruce Alexander (kickboxing) and Shena Christian (Brazilian jiu jitsu) at Toa Martial Arts Evolution Fitness gym.
Rockquest Band Competition
We are incredibly proud to announce that three of our school’s acts have advanced to the regional finals of the Rockquest Band Competition! This is a remarkable achievement for our kura.
Congratulations to Francie Lidgard, who placed 1st in the Solo/Duo category. Francie’s outstanding performance earned her one of the two spots available in a highly competitive category with 18 entries. Well done, Francie!
Both Prisoners of War and Band.com have made it to the next round. While there is no placing for this first round with bands, being among the top 12 acts from the 37 entries who move forward is a significant accomplishment. Congratulations to all the band members!
We also want to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of all our students who participated in the heats. Even though not everyone advanced to the finals, your talent, passion, and commitment were evident, and you proudly represented our school.
Thank you to all the students, teachers, and parents for your support and enthusiasm. See you at the finals!
