Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
As we hit the halfway mark of term 2, it is a good chance to reflect on what a great term we are having. I hope you are all able to make the most of the long weekend and some more desirable weather on the way.
Our fantastic Music students are achieving great things. Congratulations to both Poppy Carpenter and Francie Lidgard who have both placed in the CFM top 100 NZ songs. For Poppy to take out both 1st and 2nd spots is an amazing achievement.
The upcoming Teacher Only Day on Tuesday the 4th is one to ensure you have noted in your calendar. It is a great opportunity for the local schools to all come together and upskill to enhance learner outcomes.
I have two requests to support our students' safety both before and after school.
I have noticed some of our students who ride bikes to school arriving without bike helmets. Bike safety is something I feel strongly about as the repercussions of a head injury can be devastating and long lasting. Please ensure your child is wearing a helmet. Not only for safety reasons but legal ones.
The second request is the process for drop off and pick up around the intersection of Cook Drive and South Highway. We know that mornings are busy times and we want our children to arrive at class on time. We do not want this at the expense of parents and whanau stopping on yellow lines creating an unsafe situation. I also ask that you are respectful of our Neighbours properties when you are looking for parking in the proximity.
I cannot stress enough that I am contactable and you are welcome to make time to sit down and have a discussion.
Ngā mihi,
Ross Dunn

M1 Bread Starter
Rēwena bread starter bug update! It looks like our bug is working - it smells a little like sour cream or yoghurt and has bubbles forming and breaking. We are passing our bug on to M8 to complete the process of baking the bread. It’s been an interesting process to create a yeast from scratch.
M3 Anzac Art
Our Anzac Art is complete M3, and rightly so they are very proud of their Anzac Artworks, they depicted a sunrise and then everyone created an image that shows their learning about World War 1. Ka pai M3!
M9 Science
This week’s experiment is called rainbow in a bottle. It’s all about density. Each colour has different amounts of sugar to increase it’s density. Blue is the most dense, green, yellow and red. We had to listen carefully and take our time adding each colour to our bottle.
Hei 7 ANZAC Biscuits
Hei 7 have just completed a unit on the ANZACs. To complete the unit they had the option of making ANZAC biscuits at home and bringing one to school for a Masterchef competition. They all won.
Bay Bling Academy
We were delighted to welcome local artist Carmen Taylor to our Bay Bling Academy this week. Carmen shared her incredible macrame skills with our Year 9-10 students, guiding them through a hands-on workshop. Our tamariki had a fantastic time learning this beautiful craft and creating their own macrame necklaces/keychains.
For those who are interested in taking their new skills further, Carmen offers her own workshops here in Whitianga!
Y9 - Orienteering
Last Friday six of our Yr 9 boys represented Mercury Bay Area School at the first Orienteering event for schools on the Coromandel. This is going to be a termly event on the Coromandel and a great opportunity for our students to learn bush navigation from the pros at Whangamata Adventure Racers and it is sponsored by Sport Waikato. Marley Bramley, Liam Clothier and Finn Walls made up one team and Slade Harper, Jacob Comer and Noah Palmer made up the other.
Slade, Jacob and Noah finished in second place and won an adventure racers 'buff' as well as a free team entry into one of three Rigged Rogaine Events put on by Waikato Orienteering. Well done Boys!
TVSS Cross Country
A small contingent took on the Thames Valley new course on South Farms at Mangatarata.
Our students did really well and enjoyed the sloping course without the killer hill like in previous years.

Y13 Physics
This week my Yr13 students determined the resonant frequency of water molecules (basic principles of an MRI machine) using a microwave and....... Wraps and Chocolate!!! I love my job!
Using the concept of standing waves and harmonics created in a microwave cavity 'hot spots' form in a microwave, if you don't rotate the turntable. From these hot spots (melted chocolate) we can determine the wavelength (greek letter, lambda (upside down Y)) of a microwave, chuck in the known value for the speed of electromagnetic radiation (speed of light) ....boom we can calculate a frequency, which water willl resonate at. My students got 3 GHz, and the expected value is 2.5 GHz ....Get in!
There is a conservation law to observe too with Yr 13 students..... chocolate and wraps ....they came and went ....I started with nothing I left with nothing!!
Physics is yum and fun!!

Y13 Outdoor Ed Trips
The Yr13 Outdoor Education classes have been learning about impacts of Adventure Tourism on NZ society. As part of this learning they had the opportunity to complete the Timber Trail - an 85km mountain bike ride in the Central North Island.
The first group of students benefited from some good weather and showed incredible perseverance and resilience in what was two big days of riding.
A big thanks goes out to Johnny at FourB cycles in Taupo for providing the bikes and his support.
NI Secondary School 2 Day Horse Trial
On the 17th May Lexi Ford and Ella Simpson left for Taupo with their horses to represent Mercury Bay Area School in the annual North Island Secondary School 2 Day Horse Trial.
Both girls rode really well finishing in the top 10 of their classes. Key achievements for the girls was Lexi achieving her best eventing dressage test to date, Ella with a Clear Show jumping round in the Indoor Arena and both girls completed the tough Cross Country Course coming home safely which proved quite difficult for a lot of the other riders and horses.
Huge thanks to the parents for the help and their support with getting the girls to and from the event.
