Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
Primary Years Update
Kia ora e te whānau,
Primary Years Assembly
We continue to appreciate and enjoy whānau presence at our primary assemblies. These are the dates for the rest of this term:
Friday 21st June
Friday 5th July
Remember to be seated by 9:00am if you are coming:)
Matariki:
We are in the process of planning some special cohort (year level) gatherings to celebrate and share some kai (soup) and learning. The date for this is Thursday 27th June (day before the nationwide observation). Further details will be sent out once we have confirmed with staff:) You will likely be notified via dojo. It would be great if whānau are able to attend:)
Community Cook:
As part of providing students opportunities to be “Good People and Good Citizens,” Mrs Lidgard has been working with some interested primary students on planning and organising a meal for people they would like to show appreciation for and to share some of their learning with. Students have already decided on the menu and have been thinking about who they would each like to invite. We can’t wait to see how this important event goes:)
Attendance:
Thank you to those whānau that religiously inform our attendance officer of any student absences. It is really important that we are able to ensure our students are where they are supposed to be. Another crucial part is that you let us know why your child is away i.e unwell, visiting whānau, whānau funeral, whānau holiday etc - this information allows us to use the correct code (as set by MoE). If we do not know the reason then students have a ? (unknown reason) which will become T (truant) after a certain amount of days. Sending your child back to school with a note (like the good old days:) is perfectly fine too.
Parent Interviews:
These are coming up next Wednesday 19th June. If you haven’t had a chance yet, please make sure to book a time to speak with your child’s teacher. It is great to bring your child with you too:)

Pause Breathe Smile:
Primary staff have had the last professional learning for this on Wednesday this week. This means that staff will be able to start implementing the lesson plans and teaching our primary students strategies to help them work through emotions, to focus their attention and how to be mindful. We are excited with everything we have learned in this space and we can’t wait to share it with your tamariki:)
Reminders:)
- Attendance:If your child is going to be away please let us know: attendance@mbas.ac.nz; text 021 0255 6802; or call 07 8665916. It is also really helpful if you leave a message or text, to let us know why your child is away. The difference between ‘being away’ and ‘being away due to illness’ can be significant for us when tracking attendance:)
- Students who arrive late need to go to the main admin office to receive a late pass, which they then hand to their teacher :) Please do not rely on classroom teachers to relay this information from a dojo message:)
- Lost Property: Our mountain of lost property continues to grow:( It seems wasteful and unnecessary. If your child’s uniform is named at least we know where to return it to:)
- Photolife - These should be coming home soon if they haven’t already:)
Ngā mihi,
Hira & Pip

Room 22 - Librarian Visit
Jess from the library visited us on Tuesday. We have been learning about celebrations for our over arching connections mahi. The tamariki showed great whakaute/ respect as an audience.
M1 - Words and Writing
Small group work with children hearing a word and then recalling how to write it down. Some words become tricky when you add -ing but the tamariki have consolidated their learning about the rules. Ka pai to mahi!
M9 - Science
This week we made a lava lamp, using oil, water, food colour and a fizzy tablet. What happened when we added each new liquid? Then the fizzy tablet? This one was so interesting to watch.

Sports Results
Football
The Mercury Bay Junior Boys are playing in the 3rd Division of the Waikato Secondary School Football Association.
Mercury Bay Junior Boys beat Hamilton Boys Silver 4-1. Goals to Joel Iggulden, Ben Collins, Curtis Treherne and Noah Palmer.
MBAS Equestrian Team
The MBAS Equestrian Team sent 4 riders to St Peters School in Cambridge to compete along with 16 teams in the North Island Secondary Schools Show Hunter Carnival. Ella Simpson and Tahlia Osbourne competed in the pony ring with Sarah-Kate Lusby and Lexi Ford competing in the horse ring.
Show Hunter is the technical art of jumping, in addition to not knocking down any jump rails the horse must have a natural jumping style. Jumping a show hunter course requires a skill and discipline to ride a predetermined number of strides between jumps and maintain an even rhythm.
Our riders did exceptionally well with the following results.
Pony 90cm Show Hunter – Tahlia placed 4th
Horse 80cm Equitation Class – Sarah-Kate placed 1st
Horse 90cm Equitation Class – Lexi placed 3rd
