Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
From the Middle Years...
Thank you to all of the parents who came to our student-led conferences last week to listen to their child's presentation on their learning journey so far. We hope that you were as blown away as we were with their confidence and ability to share their triumphs and challenges. Now we need to ensure that they set the next set of goals and complete the year achieving everything they have set out to.
As we come to the end of term, our year 9 and 10 students will be completing their first semester courses. Next term they move on to new choices. Their new teachers will email you with an outline of what they can expect in the second semester, please look out for these emails and engage in conversation with your child so that we can work together to ensure they achieve success. The emails are intended for you to have direct contact with your child's teacher, if you have any questions or concerns or would like to make an appointment to see them, you can do this directly with your child's teachers.
The best way Parents can help teachers is to Be Involved – Let your child's teachers know that as a parent you are involved in your child’s education. Create a positive relationship with your child's teachers. Be an active participant in your child’s learning process so that you can work together with the teacher to ensure your child's success.
I wish you a great winter break and hope that you will be able to share some special whānau time with your children.
Kia kaha,
Jenny Bloom
Deputy Principal - Middle Years

Cook for the Community
Our philosophy here at MBAS is “Growing good people, Growing good learners”. By giving or sharing with others the children will develop a sense of happiness, satisfaction and optimism. Sharing of kai is such a fundamental ritual in many cultures and grows relationships of whanaungatanga (care and connectedness).
On Tuesday 25th of June, 8 children from across years 4-6 prepared, cooked and presented a meal to a guest they had invited from the community. The children had to think of someone - a friend, neighbour, grandparent, or other Whitianga community member they wanted to cook for and share their learning with.
Here they are enjoying macaroni cheese and bacon with salad - complemented by freshly squeezed lemonade juice prepared by Archer Joswey. There was lots of conversation around their recent matariki learning, and people shared other stories, including their connections to the local area.
We hope this initiative will continue next term to grow our local connections, and foster citizenship at MBAS even further.

Poetry In Action
Poetry in Action visited our kura last Friday. They performed 4 different innovative shows to years 7-10 - from an introduction to poetry to more specific examples of how to read and understand World War 1 poetry. The students enjoyed the performances immensely and got a lot of learning from them. Poetry in Action have since emailed and said that their actors gave "wonderful feedback" on how engaged our students were in the content. Please take the time to talk to your 7 - 10 learner about this experience and who knows ... maybe there's a budding poet in your home!
Our Best Friend Academy
Our Best Friend Academy had the opportunity this week to have a go at grooming the most beautiful Husky. Thank you to Tia Samuel (yr 9) and her dad Leon for allowing us to have the most amazing time with their dog. We were able to learn a lot and Ruck was so patient with us!
Y7/8 Matariki Day
The Year 7-8's spent a great day participating in Matariki electives including, kowhaiwhai, scriptwriting and drama and Rāranga flax weaving.
Business Market Day
The sun and students were shining on what was a bright and fun first business market day for 2024. The students managed to produce some quality products that were popular with people and pets. There was a little bit of everything from products on offer from healthy snacks through to house decor. There was a lot of learning that took place about pricing, promotion and what it takes to run a successful business. We have the fun job now of counting money and looking at the finances. Thanks to everyone who came and supported the day. Congratulations to the business students who joined in - you really did shine!
Year 10 Hospitality Class: Burger Competition Day 2024
Tēnā koe
Over terms 1 & 2, our Year 10 Hospitality students embarked on a culinary journey to master the art of making the perfect burger. The students delved into every aspect of burger creation—from selecting ingredients to mastering grilling techniques, perfecting the perfect beef pattie and balancing flavors with a variety of toppings and sauces.
Over the weeks, the classroom transformed into a bustling kitchen, filled with the delicious aromas of sizzling patties, grilled cheese and burgers!. Students experimented with different types of meats, accompaniments and condiments, each working towards their unique interpretation of the ultimate burger.
The culmination of their hard work and dedication was the much-anticipated Burger Competition Day. The students voted for their judges from the teachers at school. These comprised:
Hugh Fairweather
Mark Irwin
Alison Drake-Wells
Each student presented their culinary creation to the panel of discerning judges, who enthusiastically volunteered for the delicious duty. The judges evaluated each burger on taste, creativity, presentation, passion, organizational skills and kitchen health and safety.
The competition showcased the students' creativity and culinary skills. From classic kiwi burgers, cheeseburgers to gourmet creations including chicken burgers, creamy mushroom sides, perfectly cooked crispy fries (which I witnessed Hugh sneak a few while judging!) and Mediterranean flavours. The variety and quality were truly impressive. In addition the students took great care in their plating and presentation. Congratulations to all our Year 10 students for their hard work and remarkable progress this term.
The overall winner was Kane Fredericksen congratulations. Runners up were Charlotte Thurgood and Isabelle Thurgood. Congratulations.
The Burger Competition Day was a resounding success, not only highlighting their culinary talents but also their ability to work under pressure and present with confidence. I hope all the 10HOS students enjoyed the experience, most importantly had fun and will be back next year. Thank you also to our dedicated judges.
