Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
From the Principal
Kia ora,
As we reach the end of Term 2, it is a good opportunity to take a moment to reflect on the many accomplishments and highlights of the past few months. This term has been filled with growth, learning, and community engagement, and I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our students, staff, and whānau.
Term 2 has been a busy time for extracurricular activities. Our sports teams have competed admirably across a multitude of competitions. Our musical groups and solo artists have also shone brightly, with impressive performances in the smokefree rockquest and other performance opportunities. A special thank you to our coaches, teachers, and parent volunteers who have supported our students in these endeavours.
I regularly visit classrooms throughout the school and would like to acknowledge the improvements in student behaviour, uniform, punctuality and attendance. Thank you for your support with this. It is making a real difference in the school culture.
Well done to Sam Ribet and the students who participated in this year's student-led production. It was a brilliant show and you should be very proud of your accomplishment.
We have had the pleasure of hosting several community events this term, including our annual Matariki celebrations, which was a tremendous success. We had a range of activities in Years 7 and 8 as well as Celebration assemblies in Years 1 to 6. The support from our community was overwhelming.
Our teachers have engaged in professional development opportunities to further their skills and knowledge. This term, our school hosted workshops for the wider Coromandel community of schools. We are committed to providing the best possible education for our students, and continuous professional development is a key part of this commitment.
As we look ahead to Term 3, there are several exciting events on the horizon. Keep an eye on our school calendar and newsletter for more details.
As we head into the school holidays, I encourage everyone to take this time to relax and recharge. It has been a busy and productive term, and it is important for our students, staff, and families to enjoy a well-deserved break. Stay safe and make the most of this time with your loved ones.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s education. I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for an exciting Term 3.
Ngā mihi,
Ross Dunn

The Secret Case of Sherlock Holmes Stuns the Stage During Matariki Weekend!
The community turned out in great numbers for the Saturday and Sunday sessions of "The Secret Case of Sherlock Holmes," which hit the stage during the Matariki weekend. The play's director, Sam Ribet, expressed his pride in the crew, saying, "The performances were amazing. All actors stepped up and performed above and beyond. I found it more stressful to be backstage than on stage, as I had to accept everything out of my control, but that taught me to trust my crew even more!"
Sam hopes the school will continue to provide opportunities for students to thrive in the arts, offering more chances like this in the future. Congratulations to all the students involved!
International Students Heading Home
As we come to the end of term 2 it is also time to say farewell to a number of our international students who will be heading home to their own families over the next few days. We cannot stress enough just how fantastic this group of students have been. Great ambassadors for their home countries and indeed for MBAS during their time here. They have brought the world to our doorsteps and have left an everlasting and indelible impression on us all. When we think about developing global citizens there are attributes we hope our students will develop on their learning journeys. Being risk takers, open-minded, principled, reflective and of course our KAURI values. These students have not only engaged within these attributes but have also inspired us all to continue developing as internationally minded global citizens. Thank you to all our departing students for- sharing your culture, your perspectives and a ton of laughs!Of course none of this could happen if we didn't have the support of our community. To all of our homestay families who have invested time in ensuring a positive experience for our students in a safe and secure environment, thank you. Your commitment is very much appreciated by the school, the students, and their parents. Finally I would like to congratulate Alessandro Ardemagni who, during his South Island holiday, won the NZ Educational Tours photo competition. I am sure you will agree, it was well deserved. Ka rawe Alessandro!
Safe travels to all heading home. You will be missed!
Room 23 - Number Knowledge
This week we are working on developing our number knowledge, identifying numbers and strategies for counting. This is something you can practice at home as there’s lots of opportunities for counting and repetition in our home life.
M3 - Jump for June
Jump for June 2024!
M3 had so much fun this week participating in this event, hearts sure were pumping!
Special mention to Parker who won the Year 3/4 skipping competition, ka pai!
Hei 2 Water Savers
Hei 2 completed a Water Savers inquiry to learn all about this precious resource and participate in a 10-day statistical investigation into how to save water. We researched and verified a wide range of water facts, conducted a coin water experiment to learn about the scientific method and surface tension, practised five water saving actions a day at home (including 5-minute showers!), and presented our results using a bar graph. As a class, we saved a total of 40,603 litres!
Hei Waru Learning
Over this term Hei Waru has been studying the New Zealand Wars. They have looked at the attack at Kororareka, the battle of Te Ahuahu, through to the battle at Ruapekapeka. The class has also studied key people in the Northern Wars, Part of their study has seen them construct a model of the Ruapekapeka pa.
Y 7/8 Winter Sports Day
The year 7 and 8 students had their annual Winter Sports Day on Tuesday 2nd July. There were 12 teams and 6 codes: rippa, football, netball, basketball, indoor hockey and Tapu Ae. We were interrupted by two showers of rain but soldiered on. A huge thank you to all the year 7 and 8 staff and special thanks to Leisa for stepping in to help on the day. To Mr Davy and the 12 wonderful Year 10 umpires/referees, we all appreciated your assistance on the day. You rock.
Y 7/8 Matariki Electives - Garden
One of this year's Matariki activities was the design and implementation of a garden to grow kumara and potatoes for our Hangi fundraising. The site that was chosen was just behind Hei block, on a site where Kowhai trees had been planted to celebrate a prior Matariki. The team quickly got to work with donated timber, seaweed. The ground was covered with seaweed, then cardboard to keep the weeds out, then soil. The garden was then surrounded with ti tree palisades. The plan is to keep adding to the garden and being a new learning hub for our Kura.
Y 7/8 Matariki Electives - Kowhaiwhai
18 year 7 and 8 students learnt about Kohwaiwhai at the year 7 and 8 Matariki Electives day on Thursday 27th June. They then drew their own patterns on to wood and painted them. Some used the traditional colours of red, black and white and others chose contemporary colours. Here are the wonderful results.
Y7/8 Wood Technology
In Y7/8 Wood technology, students have been designing and building their own media device holder and passive speaker. Their design had to incorporate a shape and hot poker design which reflects their culture. Here are some of the creations from LAE.
Y9 Wood Technology
In Y9 Wood technology students had to design, price and construct a table which was unique to them and their culture. Here are some of their amazing creations.
MBAS Enviro Group
On Saturday and Sunday of the King’s Birthday weekend, the Enviro group volunteered to do some dune planting in Rings Beach (Kuaotunu) and Whangapoua. Thank you to everyone who came along to help out, and thank you to Coast Care Waikato for organising the dune plantings!
