Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
Primary Years Update
Kia ora e te whānau,
Well we are nearly half way through the term and the time has flown by. As with every other term, we have some exciting things happening this term, some which you will be aware of have already happened.
Primary Years Assembly
We continue to appreciate and enjoy whānau presence at our primary assemblies.
These are the dates for the rest of this term:
Friday 13th September
Friday 27th September
Remember to be seated by 9:00am if you are coming:)
Matariki:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the whānau that attended our Matariki assemblies last term and were able to stay and share some soup with your children. Your attendance is always appreciated, especially by your children.
Structured Literacy:
This has been a hot topic recently in the media. We are excited to share that we were successful in securing our piece of the funding pie and our teachers of students that are year 1, 2 or 3 will be participating in professional learning for the second half of this term. We are excited to have this opportunity and be able to add more tools to our kete matauranga:)
Dance Show:
Miss Marra, Curriculum Leader of The Arts in our primary years, has planned and is supporting our teachers with their dance programmes that will lead to a dance show from our primary students. You may already have your children dancing around the house practising. There will be more details to follow so keep an eye out in your child’s class dojo messages and stories:)…
Pause Breathe Smile:
This programme is now being implemented across our primary classes with some interesting insights about mindful eating, feeling relaxed, safe, calm and happy after lessons and spending time intentionally identifying things we are grateful for.
Reminders:)
- Attendance:If your child is going to be away please let us know: attendance@mbas.ac.nz; text 021 0255 6802; or call 07 8665916. It is also really helpful if you leave a message or text, to let us know why your child is away. The difference between ‘being away’ and ‘being away due to illness’ can be significant for us when tracking attendance:)
- Students who arrive late need to go to the main admin office to receive a late pass, which they then hand to their teacher :) Please do not rely on classroom teachers to relay this information from a dojo message:)
- Lost Property: Our mountain of lost property continues to grow:( It seems wasteful and unnecessary. If your child’s uniform is named at least we know where to return it to:)
- Photolife - Sports photos are 22nd and 23rd August:)
Ngā mihi,
Hira & Pip

Primary Calendars
It is that time of year again where Primary students have been busy creating art to be made in calendars, cards, mouse mats, diaries and sketch pads. You can order now on Kindo or you can pay cash or eftpos at the office. Make sure to return the form. Orders close on the 30th August. We will not be able to take late orders as we need to make sure these can be back in time for Christmas!
Upcoming Charity Concert
The annual Charity Concert from MBAS Music Department is coming up this month on Tuesday 20th and Thursday 22nd of August. This year the students have chosen to donate to Breast Cancer Foundation NZ with all proceeds from ticket sales and additional donations going there. This event has continued to grow over the years and has now become a staple community event. Many years ago it was just a one night show in a smaller space with about 50 available tickets - it has now grown to a 2 night show with 100 tickets per night and often sells out, or is very close to it, both nights. The inside of the school hall gets completely transformed into a performance venue which looks and feels very suitable to host the authentic and high quality show that this has become. The students are fully involved in the process of setting up the performance space, learning about sound and lighting as well as going through all the motions of a full scale show. They also choose their own bands and songs to perform and always work towards performing at their highest level for this showcase. Tickets are available at the front office of Mercury Bay Area School for $10 each with children under 5 free. Shows start at 7pm both nights and are expected to run between 90 - 120mins.
M3 - Science Visit
This week we were lucky to be able to visit Mr Lidgard's science classroom and visit the octopus. We then returned to class and were straight into some investigating. M3 found out so many interesting facts about octopus such as they are very intelligent, they have three hearts and they are masters of camouflage!
Room 30 - Sharks
Last Friday we had a special visitor come to Rm30 to share some important and interesting information about Sharks. Indie’s Uncle Damien is a Marine Biologist from Florida. He shared lots of pictures and information about what kind of research he gets to do. Very fascinating stuff! Thank you for a lovely treat for us on a Friday.
Drama - Weapons Workshop
Last Friday we had the privilege to have a Shakespearen stage combat workshop at our kura. The focus was on learning to act out combat scenes both safely and convincingly and also on how to act out sword fights (plastic ones were used in this case!). Students had a great time, learnt a lot and no doubt left the workshop buzzing with excitement!
Wearable Arts
The year 7 and 8's are underway. Designing and creating their Wearable Arts.
Y7/8 - Wearable Arts Invitation
Community Service Academy
Community Service Academy helped do some plant repotting with M8. All 14 students from Mrs Lidgard's class did a wonderful job, as did the Academy students.
L1 Design and Visual Communication
Level 1 Design and Visual Communication students produce a spatial design outcome during term 1.
For term 2 students investigate visual communication techniques then promote their design.

MBAS Fundraising Quiz Night is back - Sept 6th
Friday September 6
Our annual quiz night school fundraiser is fast approaching - only 4 weeks to go!
We are seeking sponsors from our school community to provide some amazing items for our auction. If you are self-employed, please consider donating 2 or 3 hours of your work time. This could reap lots of rewards by way of extra work. If you would like to discuss this further please leave your name at the school office, or email fmbas@mbas.ac.nz or phone Kathy on 0273161955.
Thank you to those of you who have already offered sponsorship.
We would still appreciate each student bringing along a grocery item for a grocery raffle by August 30th, which will be running as part of the quiz. We plan to sell the raffle the week before the quiz and on the quiz night, where it will be drawn. Your help would be appreciated.
Tickets for the quiz night are on sale NOW from the school office.
Organise some friends and come along for a great night. Tickets are $30 each, which includes a platter for your table (8 per table) and a glass of bubbly on entry. The theme for this year's quiz is ‘Through Time’ with a prize for the best dressed table. This year the majority of quiz questions will be of a more general nature with a few theme specific ones.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
