Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
I am writing this as our senior students are successfully sitting their derived grade exams this week. There has been a lot of nervous energy around the kura as our students gathered around ready to enter the exam hall. However, I have also been greeted by a large number of broad smiles as they have exited the hall as well, pleased with their efforts. Feeling a little anxious and being nervous is a demonstration of care and connection to their learning and successful achievement.
We have some exciting events coming up in the next couple of weeks, starting with the launch of School Spirit Week. Wednesday is Pajama Day, Thursday is Character Day and Friday is Daffodil Day/Shave for a Cure Day. Please refer to the posters for more details.
The Year 7 and 8 Wearable Arts Showcase is being held in the school hall on Wednesday starting at 6pm. (Year 7 and 8 students are expected in Hei block from 5.15pm)
Tuesday next week we are holding our annual Open Day for Year 9 to Year 13 students. Our awesome Year 13s support the day presenting and discussing their experiences with the other cohorts as they circulate around the different faculties and learning areas. The goal for the day is to support our students making the best informed decisions regarding their learning programmes for 2025. Courses are currently being designed in the middle years based on student voice and our senior years course guide for 2025 is available on our school website.
I would like to take the opportunity to wish our sports teams, who are representing Mercury Bay next week at national secondary tournaments, all the very best. It is a fantastic opportunity for our isolated kura to compete and engage with secondary schools from around the country.
Our kapa haka group will also be participating at the annual Coromandel cultural festival next week. This year the festival is being hosted by Whangamata Area School. They have been working hard on their waiata and haka routines and will be representing us with mana.

Charity Concert Success!
A Night to Remember: School Charity Concert Raises $1,500 for Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand.
Our recent school charity concert was a resounding success, raising $1,500 for the Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand across two electrifying nights. With stunning lighting effects enhancing every moment, our student bands took the stage and delivered performances that were nothing short of professional. The lineup, which featured dynamic band acts and a standout duo, left the audience in awe. The incredible turnout and energy from both nights made this event truly special. We are immensely proud of our students and grateful to everyone who helped make this concert such a triumph.
Room 23 - Mindfulness
After lunch play we take 10 minutes to rest and reconnect with our tinana.
We vary between listening to gentle music and then doing a mindfulness activity based on connecting breath and body and regulating our senses. Today we switched things up and chose a short audio book.
Lots of sleepy body’s and minds today, so this rest was well needed.
Beautiful to see the tamariki connecting in with their individual needs during this time and recognising ways to regulate.
M1 - Wetlands
The beach scene in our classroom is slowly being replaced with a wetlands scene. Many of the birds we have learned about can also be found in a wetland as well as some of the insects. We played a fun game of ‘guess that bird’ based on bird sounds. It was fantastic to have so many birds identified just by their sound alone.
M9 - Technology
Our technology challenge was to create a marble run and to test it. We showed creativity, perseverance and problem solving skills to complete this challenge.
Primary Wetland Planting
M6, Rooms 30, 31 and 32 were involved in wetland planting on Tuesday. We will be kaitiaki of these seedlings until they can be planted next winter. Thanks to Whaea Bex for organising this experience for us! Check out our lovely writing below aswell.
Y7 - Visual Arts
Check out these fantastic works of art from Year 7TMI students who have just finished a 6 week rotation in Visual Arts.
Year 7-8 Technology Rotation
Students investigate harnessing wind energy to compete against their peers in a wind powered vehicle competition. A large component of the course is invested in developing skills, first on paper, then using the CAD (computer aided design) program sketchup, to visually communicate their design ideas in both 2 and 3D.
Y7/8 - Wearable Arts Invitation
Y9-10 Te Ao Matihiko Expo
Last Friday thirty year 9 and 10 students attended the Te Ao Matihiko Expo in Thames for an immersive and inspiring look into the future of work potential in Digital Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship. There was an activation zone that set up for students to have a go at using some of the latest technology including VR and animation, and the opportunity to participate in an e-sports Rocket League tournament. The Weta Workshop was also there doing horror film makeup on willing participants, this was a hit! Students had the opportunity to listen to a number of leading Māori Technology Entrepreneurs who shared their journey and some inspiration for students in Digital Technology careers. Our students were awesome all day, participating and engaging fully in the experience, and placed well in the e-sports tournament with representatives in 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams!
Chloe Jones - Powerlifting
Last week Chloe broke and set the teen 2 Deadlift only world record under U 100ś weight category, and deadlifted 125KGs, this wasn't an all time Pb but overall she currently has the world record. Nationals was held at Te Awamutu event centre on the 17th and 18th of August with over 100 athletes competing over these 2 days. What an awesome acheivement!
Basketball Prizegiving
