From the Middle Years
This week was an extremely busy one at our kura. Lots of fun dressing up for spirit week as well as our Year 7&8 wearable arts show and our Kapa Haka team headed off to Whangamata for the Cultural Festival. The students were amazing and had loads of fun. We also had inter-house competitions at lunchtime.
Tuesday was our year 9-13 Open day where our students had the opportunity to go around to all the different learning areas on offer for next year's course selection. This was led by our stunning year 13's who made themselves available to present and answer questions about their learning experiences, giving students great advice to make good choices for their future.
Year 10 - 12 will be making these selections this week - go online to our website and ensure you chat as a Whānau to ensure that the choices you make are based on pathways for your future. The year 8's and 9's will NOT be selecting their courses until later on in the year.
It’s a good idea for you and your child to talk about any areas of interest or particular strengths they have and which subject options they are thinking about choosing. If you are unsure about which subjects your child wants to take, then make an appointment with your child's year level Dean and ask for advice. .
The subject selection process is an exciting part of your child's education journey. It allows them to reflect on how the subjects they study at school affect their future career path. If you support your child to choose suitable subjects, they are more likely to achieve good results in their final years of school.
If your child knows what they want to study after leaving school, they can identify a number of courses to explore. It's important that you and your child are aware of what your child needs to pursue a pathway of their choice. If they don't know that pathway yet, that's ok - they then need to select subjects that can keep the doors open for when they do decide.
Encourage your child to choose subjects that:
- enable them to work from their strengths
- challenge them to make the most of their capabilities
- provide them with the qualification they need to pursue their ambitions after school
- are enjoyable while they study
- offer a range of study that is manageable
- provide life skills
- are their choice and not the choice of their friends or who the teacher might be
Get engaged with your child's subject choices for 2025 now!
On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week our yr 10 students (and upwards) are sitting their Literacy and Numeracy Co-requisite exams and we wish them the best of luck!
Not long until the spring break. Let's work hard right up to the end of the term!

Wetlands Design a Badge
Last week we learnt about the wetlands and then entered a design a badge competition that the Mercury Bay Museum had put on. Koa from M7 won the competition and had his design made into a badge and a bag of goodies! Leia from M7 won her age group (7-9) year olds and also got a goodie bag. Arlo from M1 won runner up for his age group. Well done everyone!

UNISS Netball
Our Senior A Netball team competed at UNISS at Waitakere over the course of the week. The girls came up against some tough competition and loved the experience of playing against girls their own age. It was a big week for personal growth for a lot of the players. It was also the last school netball for 3 of the seniors players. A massive thanks to their coach Zoe Smith and Manager Leisa McCleery.

TVP Cross Country
Tuesday the 3rd of September saw a group year 4-8 cross country runners travel to Gordons Farm in Ngatea. The weather and conditions were perfect. What is cross country without mud, hills, and gravel roads. All the runners put in an awesome effort that they should be proud of. Special mention to both Dominic McKenzie and Isla Goodall placing 3rd in their race, Boh Boyd racing in the 12 year old girls placed 4th in a hard fought race. While Neela Sacault, running in the same race, finished an amazing 1st place. Well done. A big thank you to all the parents who helped to transport the runners.
Thames Valley Rippa Rugby Finals
The Thames Valley Rippa Rugby Finals were held on Wednesday at Paeroa after 4 qualifying tournaments were held at 4 locations. Once again the 7/8 girls showed their skills and team work and were undefeated throughout the qualifying and finals day. Thanks to coaches Tyron Cummings and Oscar McGregor for your time spent sharing your knowledge of the game.

Nurses Notes
This is a reminder that Mercury Bay Area School has an agreement with Pinnacle Midlands Health Network and Te Whatu Ora Waikato to provide free nursing services on site.
Earlier this year a letter was sent to parents / caregivers outlining the comprehensive wellbeing review for all consenting year 9 students. These assessments are carried out over the year as part of our nursing service, with the aim of improving the health of our students so that they can come to school well and able to learn.
Your student / rangatahi may or may not yet have had their wellbeing review completed by this stage, as they are seen throughout the year.
If you have previously opted off, this will not be applicable to your young person – this will already be on record. If you have questions or you would like to choose to opt out, please contact your school nurse via email nurse@mbas.ac.nz or text to 027 327 3945.
Kind regards,
