MBAS Calendar
Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
From the Primary Years
Kia ora e te whānau,
Term 4 and we are raring to go! We have yet another jam packed term and I hope everyone has seen the Dojo post with calendar dates for everything that is happening!
We endeavour to communicate everything that is going on in a timely manner, across a number of different platforms. We understand that not everyone looks at Facebook posts, or emails regularly, or whole primary dojo posts, or even dare I say it, read the school newsletters - but we rely on parental engagement in one or more of these platforms:)
Just in case you didn’t see it:)
Friday 1st Nov - Whole School Teacher Only Day
(Staff will be participating in professional learning)
Thursday 7th Nov - Non Uniform Day (aka Mufti Day)
For this day instead of a coin donation we are asking whānau to donate an item to go towards quick fire raffle hampers for the gala day. You can start to send in items now, to classrooms where they will be collected:) We thank you for your support:)
Year 1/2 - Non perishable foods (crackers, chips, chocolates, coffee, tea, biscuits, popcorn)
Year 3/4 - Non perishable foods (crackers, chips, chocolates, coffee, tea, biscuits, popcorn)
Year 5/6 - Bathroom products (Soap, loofah, shampoos, bath bombs)
Thursday 21st Nov - Year 1-2 Cross Country Fun Run
(More detail to follow)
Tuesday 26th Nov - Road Patrol Training for 2025 Team:)
Friday 29th School Gala 3pm - 6pm
(NB: 2pm finish so everything can be set up - Buses will run like they do on Wednesdays)
Assemblies:
This term, due to the hall being booked for senior exams, we will be holding primary assemblies in the 30s block. At this stage our first assembly will be week 4. Please keep an eye out for further details of start time etc.
Scooters and Bikes:
We have had some near misses with scooters and bikes that could have ended with some gnarly injuries within school grounds and out and about in the community. If your child comes to school on a scooter or bike please remind them how to be road safe and aware of others around them. A swinging scooter can be quite lethal!
Reminders:)
- If your child is going to be away please let us know: attendance@mbas.ac.nz; text 021 0255 6802; or call 07 8665916. It is also really helpful if you leave a message or text, to let us know why your child is away. The difference between ‘being away’ and ‘being away due to illness’ can be significant for us when tracking attendance:)
- Students who arrive late need to go to the main admin office to receive a late pass, which they then hand to their teacher :) Please do not rely on classroom teachers to relay this information from a dojo message:)
- Lost Property: Our mountain of lost property continues to grow:( It seems wasteful and unnecessary. If your child’s uniform is named at least we know where to return it to:)
Ngā mihi,
Hira & Pip

Y9/10 2025 Course Selection Currently Underway
All year 8 and 9 students need to make their course selections for 2025.
These are done through the KAMAR portal this year.
Here is what you need to do:
- Go to the MBAS web site, hover over the 'years' tab, then hover the mouse over 'Middle Years' - scroll down to 'Course Guide', and click. Scroll down the page until you see 'Year 9 courses'. Make sure you have read all of your options for Year 9 and made your decisions.
- Then login into the KAMAR portal ( https://kamar.mbas.ac.nz/ ) using your school login. - Parents can do this too: log into the Parent Portal - go to https://kamar.mbas.ac.nz/ and use the passwords shared with you at the start of the year. If you do not remember this login please e-mail the school office (mbas@mbas.ac.nz) and request your password.
- The portal will give parents/caregivers access to their child's timetable, attendance by class, school calendar, student details, career pathways information and COURSE SELECTION.
- Scroll through until you find the course name and code you want to take, click on the Course title and code and you can read the course description - if that's the course you want to select, then click the 'x' to select - it will change to a green 'tick' once selected. Tick your back-up choice under 'Alternative'.
- You need to select ONE course from each column.
- You have compulsory courses in: English, Mathematics; Science; Social Studies and Physical Education & Health.
NOTE: you need to select:
- Select 2 Literacy courses and 1 'alternative'
- Select 2 Numeracy courses and 1 'alternative'
- Select 4 Option Courses and 2 'alternatives'
- Select 2 Academy Courses and 1 'alternative'
It is REALLY important that parents go through these course selections carefully with their child, as choices can NOT be changed once our timetable has been finalised.
MBAS Twilight Gala - Save the Date!
Mercury Bay Area School is holding a Twilight Gala on the 29th of November from 3pm - 6pm. There will be an epic obstacle course style bouncy castle, food stalls, plants, quick fire raffles, wooden items, book stalls, a stage with the school's talent on it and even a colour run! Mark your calendars and come and join in on the fun.
We are on the hunt for some donations of items to run a bric-a-brac/white elephant stall and a book stall. So if you have some good condition and working items that you would like to donate lying around your house this could be your opportunity to spring clean. Donations can come to school with your child to their teacher or to the office.
Thank you to the following businesses for supporting with donations towards our quickfire raffles, Whitianga Paper Plus, Espy Cafe, Dive Zone, Glass Bottom Boat, Funzone, Wild Wood Mini Golf, Whiti Nails and Beauty, Bakes by the Fisherman's Wife, Twin Cinemas, Accounting by Design, Blue Door Therapy, Infinite Health Club, Peninsula Party Hire, Matilda the Time Travelling Fairy, Fabian from CFM and Mercury Bay Marine. If you would like to donate something as well please reach out to matchettm@mbas.ac.nz
Colour Run Info
We’re holding the School Fun Run’s Crazy Colour Day as a major fundraising event this year! The event will be held on 29th November in conjunction with the Twilight Gala. We are really hoping to raise $12,000 which will pay for shade sails, new court surfaces and playgrounds.
Keep your eyes peeled for the sponsorship forms which will be sent home with your child. Once you have the form, you should sign up for a Student Profile Page at schoolfunrun.co.nz. You’ll be able to access online fundraising and can win a $20,000 Ultimate Family Experience!
Students who raise $10 or more will receive a reward, and the more money you raise the better the reward, and the more you help the school!
We’re looking for all students to participate and we’re organising a great day for our community, so we’d love everyone to come down to support the kids.
Thanks for supporting the school and we hope to see you at the event!
