Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
Kia ora Parents, Caregivers, and Students,
As we have reached the end of another school year, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on what has been an incredibly successful year for our school community.
2024 has been a year of growth, learning, and fun for our students. Whether it was in the classroom, on the sports field, or during cultural and community events, we have seen our students shine in so many ways. It has been a privilege to witness their hard work, creativity, and determination.
We are most grateful for our committed teachers and support staff who go the extra mile to ensure that our students are given a supportive learning environment.
To our parents and caregivers, your partnership is priceless. Thank you for supporting your children and working with us to create the best possible experiences for them.
And finally, to our fantastic students-you are at the heart of everything we do. We are so proud of the way you have embraced challenges, celebrated successes, and grown together as a school community.
As we head into the summer holidays and festive season, I encourage everyone to take some time out to relax, recharge, and make the most of this fantastic environment in which we live. Whether you are heading away or staying local, I hope the break is filled with joy and special memories.
We’ll return in 2025 ready for another exciting year of learning and growth. Until then, stay safe, have fun, and enjoy the well-deserved break.
Thank you all for being a part of our school’s journey this year.
Warm regards,
Ross Dunn
Principal
2025 Start Up Dates
Attendance Matters!
Attendance - Does my child have to attend school? (taken from the Attendance Matters booklet)
Section 20 of the Education Act 1989 states that:
Every person is required to be enrolled at a registered school at all times during the period beginning on the person's sixth birthday and ending on the persons' 16 th birthday.
Education is not an option - it's compulsory
Our data for Term 4 shows the total of students in each year who attended less than 80% for the year. The Ministry encourages 90% or higher attendance.
Year 1 13/76
Year 2 2/68
Year 3 10/69
Year 4 12/52
Year 5 6/60
Year 6 5/40
Year 7 14/107
Year 8 7/87
Year 9 32/97
Year 10 29/89
Term1 2025 we would like to really encourage regular attendance at school and any barriers that may prevent this we also would like to engage with the families to ensure we can achieve in having our students attend.
MBAS New Bank Account Number

M3 - Cookie Making
M3 had a lovely time this week making reindeer cookies for their morning tea.
M10 - End of Year
M10 have been enjoying some end of year festivities. Poppy came in to make sushi (as requested by the tamariki), we made Christmas gingerbread biscuits (some got a little bit crispy), wrote letters to Santa, created cards and did many crafty things. We had a fun final week of term.
Year 9 Camp - Waikawau Bay
Four days of sunshine, warm water and outdoor activities - what better way to finish the year with our year 9 cohort on camp! Staff organised the amazing activities including mini olympics, kayaking, surfing, raft building, coasteering, sandcastles, scavenger hunt and surf rescue - all amazing opportunities for our tamariki to experience, push their boundaries, be creative and work as a team. Thank you to our awesome parent volunteers who came along to be team leaders - their support and enthusiasm were invaluable. A big shout out to all staff on the camp for their wonderful activities and going above and beyond with our students taking them fishing, swimming, surfing in the evenings and playing camp games after dark. A special extra this year was movie night with popcorn on the final evening. We look forward to the opportunity in year 10 to take students on another adventure.
Mural Academy
The Mural Academy students have finished the mural that they have been working on during Terms 3 and 4. The final design is a combination of the students' design ideas and drawings, put into one composition. It reflects our love of Te Whanganui O Hei. We would like to say a very big thank you to Jason Tahatika who donated his time, positive energy and amazing art skills to work with the students and Janet Hoogwerf on this project. We all learnt a lot and really appreciated working with J.T. The mural will be going on the wall outside the Music room.
Whangamata Sports Exchange
Whangamata Sports Exchange was held on Tuesday and it was our turn to host. We played Volleyball, Softball and Touch. Mercury Bay won 8 of the 12 games in ages 7/8, 7/8 boys and 9/10 girls, 9/10 boys.
Well done to everyone who participated and thanks to the Teachers who coached and prepared the students for the day.
Mercury Bay hold the trophy for another year.

It is especially serious for babies under 12mths of age and Hapu mammas.

Immunisation is available at your medical practice.
Immunisation is FREE for anyone under 18, pregnant mums and 45- and 65-year-olds.
