Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
Senior Student Leaders
Welcome to 2025 from this year's senior leaders!!
We hope everyone had an amazing summer break and has had a great start to the school year so far. It's been a busy start as we all settle into our new routines and classes.
This year has started off strong with quite a few big events for the school. So far we’ve had the senior and middle school swimming sports, across the river swim and athletics this week as well! I want to say a big thank you and congratulations to all those who got involved and showed their support as well as all of the helpers on the days! It’s been great to see everyone dressed in their house colours! As a whole school we’ve done a fabulous job this year promoting our house spirit; many thanks to our old house leaders and lots of luck to the ones who have just taken up the role!
As Senior Leaders we are going to be running lunchtime activities for Yr 7-13s throughout the year. It will be a rotation of Open Mic, Sports and boardgames in the library. We think this is a great opportunity to get everyone participating and having lots of fun. Activities will run every Thursday lunch. There may be prizes and house points given out to those getting involved and showing our KAURI values, we look forward to seeing you all there!!
Have a great weekend!
- Senior Student Leadership Team

M1 - Sea Week
For sea week this week we have been following a group of Kina divers working in Bluff. During swimming yesterday we practiced “free diving” just like Dwayne and the rest of the free divers hunting for kinas.
This was a real challenge for us, trying to balance breath and manage our body’s. We practiced sitting on the bottom of the pool to start. Then we sat on the side of the pool and dolphin dived into the water and swam underneath the surface. Some of us can swim really far under water. We have the making of some great free divers in M1!

M10 - Writing
M10 have been getting creative with their handwriting. Our focus has been information including directionality, orientation, and size. We use large pieces of newsprint, pastels and classical music as inspiration.

Room 32 - Mindfulness
Pause breathe smile - a moment for our students to self regulate, identify what is happening within their body & minds.
It was great to practice after our lunch break before getting back into mahi.

Y 7-8 Triathlon

Y4-6 Swimming Sports
Last Friday our primary school came together for the 4-6 Swimming sports. The students came with big voices and the chants were great with everyone getting into the spirit of the house battle. The enthusiasm was incredible with students wanting to push themselves to do 25m, 50m & 100m in every stroke!
A new record was made by Amelia Jones in the 25m Fly breaking Meg Hoylands 2016 26.91 record.
Full results can be found here.

Y9-13 Athletics
Year 9-13 Athletics day was a whirlwind of excitement and energy as the students flowed out onto the field to participate in field and track events.
Records broken on the day were pocket rocket Neela Sacualt's 100m race with the new record at 13.98 who took Charlotte Thurgoods old record of 14.31 and Oscar McGregor ran a fast 11.89 beating Quinn McCleery's 12.21 record.
The house spirit was alive and well with students coming together chanting to the very end with final points giving Buffalo the edge over Tainui for the Athletics day win.
Full results can be found here.

TVSS Touch Tournament
Yesterday we travelled over to Ngatea to attend the TVSS Touch. We entered a Junior Boys and Senior Mixed team.
Junior Boys played 4 games and won 1 game and the Senior Mixed team played 4 games and won 3.

MBAS Equestrian Team
On 26th February 2x Equestrian Teams traveled to Kihikihi to compete in the North Island Secondary School Show Jumping Champs.
This year there were 23 teams across the senior division and 10 teams in the Primay/Intermediate division.
Mercury Bay had 1x Senior team consisting of Lucy Thackray, Ella Simpson, Tahlia Osborne and Lexi Ford and one Primary/Intermediate team consisting of Paige Thackray, Boh Boyd (Boh competing on 2x horses).
The teams competed at various levels across 3 different phases of Show Jumping, testing both horse and rider with an instant jump off round, an Accumulator and a jigsaw which sees 2 riders pair up and jump a series of jumps together in the same ring starting together and finishing together.
All riders rode well and are super proud of their efforts. Our Primary/Intermediate team took out first place overall and won the Shield for their division!
The seniors all rode well against some tough competition with all placing in the top 10 in most classes which is really good considering the field they were up against. They finished 10th overall out of the 23 teams.
We were the furtherest team competing in the event so a huge thank you to the parents and supporters for getting the girls to the event.

Bianca Raynel - Sailing
Bianca entered the Burgess Waikato Secondary Inter-School Sailing Competition, hosted by Hamilton Yacht Club on Friday 28th February 2025. Bianca started learning to sail 17 months ago with Mercury Bay Boating Club, so all her training has been on open waters so sailing on Hamilton Lake was very different.
She completed all 3 races, met some very kind Parents, Students and the people organising it were very welcoming.
