MBAS Calendar
Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
As we come to the end of Term Three, I wanted to take a moment to look back on the incredible term and share some important updates and highlights.
Term Three Highlights:
Student Achievements: Our students continue to amaze us with their talents and achievements. From academic success to sporting triumphs and creative endeavours, we're immensely proud of each and every one of them.
Well done to everyone who put their full effort into the preliminary exams. These practice exams are vital and create a great platform to base your preparation for your end of year exams on.
I was recently privileged to experience our Junior and Middle years speech competitions and I was so impressed by the calibre of topics and delivery. Students spoke with confidence and passion about their topics.
Cultural Celebrations: We celebrated the diverse cultures that make up our school community with last week's Kapa haka festival in Coromandel. This followed on so well from the hikoi to Rangiriri. A big thank you to the Whanau who have been supporting this space.
Community Engagement: Our school hosted several community events, including information evenings around Cyber bullying and a very successful quiz night. These opportunities for community engagement add so much value to our school.
Other FYI’s: Next term our new policy around cell phones no longer featuring at school kicks off. This will require a true school and community partnership to change the culture. We encourage you to support your child to make a good decision in the morning regarding their cell phone.
Kahui Ako: Our Kura has joined the Coromandel Peninsula’s Kahui Ako (Community of learning). This will enable us to work alongside and collaborate with all the other schools on the peninsula. Together, we can draw on each other’s experiences, skills and specific knowledge so we can face achievement challenges more effectively.
Upcoming Events:
Term Four Start: Term Four will commence on the 9th of October, and we are excited to continue our journey of learning and growth.
End-of-Year Celebrations: We're already planning for our end-of-year celebrations, including our prize giving ceremonies. Details will be shared closer to the date.
Appreciation: I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and outstanding students. It's your commitment to education and your contributions to our school that make Mercury Bay Area School a remarkable place.
Please enjoy a well-deserved break during the upcoming holidays, and I look forward to seeing you all back in Term Four, ready to embark on new adventures and achievements.
Wishing you a safe, sunny and enjoyable holiday break.
Warm regards,
Ross Dunn
Principal

Primary Speech Competition
Last Friday, Rosie Coleman and Jimmy Flanigan, represented the school in the Eastern Coromandel Speech Competition, held at Whenuakite School.
All the speeches were fantastic. Jimmy and Rosie did us proud. No placing for Jimmy (this time around); Rosie was chuffed to come 3rd. Both were really happy with the experience.
It's Spring in M3
It’s Spring and M3 are busy growing things. We put carrot tops in water and they are now growing green shoots and tiny roots. Our kūmara are just starting to produce the tiniest of roots too! We put beans on wet tissue paper last week and they have roots big enough for sowing. That was one of our tasks - planting our little beans!
Room 22 - Te Wiki o te Reo Māori
Last week Room 22 immersed themselves in te wiki o te Māori we were lucky enough to have a visit from Whaea Jess our town librarian. She read us a few stories in Te reo Maori and then we played an action game. A big thanks to our local community for providing us with so many valuable learning experiences!
Y7/8 Clean Up Day
On Wednesday, our Y7/8's went of a Clean Up Whitianga Day. Between them they collected 100kgs of rubbish. Well done to everyone involved!
Hei 7 - STEM Wonder Project
Hei 7 had the privilege of participating in the STEM Wonder Project in term 3.
They worked collaboratively in groups of 3 to learn about forms of energy, electrical circuits, the national grid and then designed blades for a wind turbine.
They tested their wind turbines, improved them, tested again, repeating this process a number of times until all groups managed to light up the whole town on the printed circuit boards. Success!

Junior Boys Football
Eight members of the MBFC Junior Boys competed in the Waikato Secondary Schools Football Association (WSSFA) 5-a-side tournament in Hamilton on Saturday. The boys had to play five games in pool play against teams from around the Waikato region. They beat Te Awamutu 4-1, beat Taumarunui 12-0, drew with Rototuna 1-1, beat HBHS Magenta 7-0, and beat HBHS Bronze 2-0. They finished top of their pool and had the final against HBHS Bronze. It was another tight game but the boys scored a goal in each half to win 2-0 again and win their division and the trophy. Well done to Harry Williscroft, Tane Ganley, Ben Collins, Tom Lamason, Arlo Hert, Zach Greenfield, Jacob Chamberlain and Joel Iggulden. A great way to finish the season for this team.
