Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
From the Middle Years
Totara Springs Sports Camp – Year 9 & 10
Congratulations to all our Year 9 and 10 students who attended Sports Camp at Totara Springs in Matamata. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to test their skills across a wide range of sports while also developing teamwork and resilience. We are incredibly proud to announce that our team was awarded the Sportsmanship Award – a true testament to the positive attitude, effort, and spirit shown throughout the week.
A huge thank you goes to our staff who gave their time and energy to make this experience possible, and to the parents whose support helped get the students to camp. We now look forward to cheering on our Year 7 and 8 group as they head off to Sports Camp in Week 7 of this term!
Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities (CAAs)
This week, our Year 10 students participated in the Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities – a new and valuable experience for many. These assessments offered students an important lesson in preparation, perseverance, and performance under formal conditions. Results will be available early next term.
Students who do not yet meet the literacy co-requisites, or who did not sit the assessments this time, will have another opportunity later in the year.
Aladdin Production – Mercury Bay Performing Arts
We hope many of you were able to attend the recent production of Aladdin, proudly presented by Mercury Bay Performing Arts. A large number of cast and crew were students from Mercury Bay Area School, and the show was a vibrant celebration of the incredible talent in our community. Well done to all those involved – your hard work and creativity shone brightly on stage!
Thank You, Mrs. Lane
Over the past term and a half, we’ve had the pleasure of having Mrs. Addie Lane relieving in several of our classes. We especially appreciated the opportunity to see some of the fantastic work her Academy class has been doing. Thank you, Mrs. Lane, for your contribution and care.

As we move toward the end of the term, we’re focused on finishing with engaged purpose and making sure our students are arriving at school prepared and ready for learning each day.

Attendance Matters!
Why is Attendance at school so Important?
School is your child's first and most important job.
Attending school is more than just about reading, writing and math. It's about learning valuable life skills, developing good work ethics and becoming a valuable member of society.
Regular attendance at school greatly improves employment, social and life chances and reduces the development of antisocial behaviour and youth offending.
Does my Child have to attend School?
Section 20 of the Education Act 1989 states that:
Every person is required to be enrolled at a registered school at all times during the period beginning on the person's sixth birthday and ending on the person's 16 birthday.
Education is not an option - it's compulsory.

M4 - Inquiry
We are exploring the story of Kupe's quest to capture Te Wheke the giant octopus. There was a huge amount of discussion about how Aotearoa was named as such by Kupe's wife yet our country carries the name New Zealand. Most thought it was named by Captain Cook and were astounded to discover that it was named by a Dutch explorer and his mapmaker. Was Te Wheke real? Could there have been such a huge octopus? Maybe it was like a Kraken or a giant squid? Lots of discussion and deep thinking about what we had read as we represented our ideas through drawing. This was a great day of making sense of our reading, making links to our lives and then comparing to our pūrākau, Rona and the Moon, that we read this week.

Room 31 - Marine Reserve Study
Room 31 is taking part in the Marine Reserves programme, and as part of our learning we were lucky enough to go out on the Glass Bottom boat on Monday. WOW! What an incredible experience. For some students this was their first time on a boat. We were all able to see what a healthy marine reserve looks like, drawing comparisons between what we had been reading and learning about, and what we were seeing.

Y7-8 Technology
Year 7&8 Technology students investigate the real world situation of migrants fleeing to Europe in barely seaworthy, overloaded boats before delving into boat design. Design ideas are tested first with paper then a final model is made from aluminium cans. Boats are tested with washers to represent a human cargo with a golf ball dropped from 1 meter to make waves.

Senior Ball Preparation
Over the past three weeks year 12 and 13 students have been attending dance classes with Mrs Debbie Reader at Kauri time on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Thus far the students have circled up with the “clap clap” dance and boot scooted to “Wagon Wheel”, next step is to learn the Waltz. The students have grabbed the opportunity with both hands (literally) and have joined in and enjoyed themselves immensely under Mrs Readers guidance. A great experience for all, well done Debbie and the students involved.

MBAS Art Students - Whitianga Lions Art Expo

Equestrian Team
The MBAS equestrian Team sent 3 riders to the North Island Secondary Schools Horse Trials in Taupo over the weekend. The event is comprised of three disciplines. Riders are scored on a set Dressage Test, they then have to complete a show jumping round and if not eliminated from these phases then on the second day they ride a cross country course – the fun bit!
Lexi Ford and her horse Grace competed in their first 95cm while Sarah-Kate Lusby on her pony Planet and Ella Simpson on her pony Nike competed in the 80cm. All three riders successfully conquered all three disciplines.
It was a busy event with over 110 riders across 30 schools in the North Island.
While the team did not place Sarah-Kate had great individual results placing 3rd in her division. Congratulations.
Big thank you to the parents and helpers that make these events possible.
