Kia Ora tātou – Greetings to you all
Primary Update
Kia ora e te whānau,
So grateful for all of the beautiful weather we have had recently (apart from the hailstorm:). This weather is a timely reminder for us to ensure our students are wearing their school hats during break times and that they are remembering to apply sunscreen. There should be sunscreen available in classes for students to use but if your whānau or child have a preferred type of sunscreen then please ensure they have some in their bags to use at kura.
Term four is just as busy as every other term as students continue to consolidate their learning and teachers are able to capture their achievement through progressions, testing and observations. Please continue to support your children with early bedtimes (which can be challenging with daylight saving :), so they are well rested and ready for learning each day.
Ruben - The Road Safety Bear
Ruben visited school on Tuesday to talk about road safety with our year 1 and 2 students. If they haven’t shared with you yet, maybe ask them what they learned and have a discussion about being road safe whether walking, biking, riding the bus, scootering or coming to kura in the car.
HMS Buffalo - Museum in class sessions
On Thursday 26th October through to Wednesday 1st November, Becs from our local museum will be in the primary years running sessions based on the HMS Buffalo. We will be lucky enough to have Matt Gainsford and Dr Kurt Bennett (Maritime Archaeologists) join us for the Friday sessions and then Kurt will be joining Becs again on the Monday. They are here to dive the wreck over that weekend. Being able to provide our students with opportunities to build on their local knowledge is a great partnership that we are proud to have with the Mercury Bay Museum.
Athletics:
All of our students across the primary years are currently learning skills that will help them with the athletics events this term:
Years 3-6 Thursday 2nd November
Years 1-2 Monday 4th December (previously advertised as Friday 1st Dec)
Students are encouraged to come dressed in their house colours - Please ask classroom teachers if you or your child are unsure of the colour of their school house (not the house they live in :):)
Your Support :)
We (the primary team) would like to thank you all for your continued support. Whether it’s been in the classroom, at sporting events, mosaics auction bidding, calendar art purchases, attendance at primary assemblies, sending positive feedback or even just ensuring your child comes with everything they need and are ready for learning. We appreciate it! Thank you!
Ngā mihi,
Hira & Pip

Dose Two will be offered on Wednesday 25th October if your child has consent for this from term one. We will also catch-up a few of the year 7 students who may have missed their Boostrix vaccination in Term 1. Your child will bring home a post-vac form on the day of vaccination.. The vaccinations will be administered by Public Health Nurses from the Waikato District Health Board.
Specialist Music Programme - Open Day
If your child is part of our Specialist Music program, you are invited to an Open Day to meet our music tutors and see your child's progress in playing their musical instrument! Check your emails for details.
Due to Labour Weekend, Guitar, Bass, Drums, and Vocals Open Days will be held next week (Week 3), while Keys Open Days will take place during Week 4.
Unfortunately, we will not be hosting the Specialist Music concert this year. This provides a unique opportunity to connect with your child and enjoy a music class together.
See you there!

M4 - Science
This term M4 have been learning about the principles of forces, friction and potential energy. This week we investigated types of catapults and in teams created our own. We then took them outside to combine our maths learning in measurement to take accurate measurements and convert centimeters into millimeters and meters. This hands-on learning has been incredibly engaging and has developed our collaboration and problem solving skills.
Room 32 - Athletics Training
Athletics training is in full swing, here are a few snaps from Room 32's high jump training this week. Looking great!
Skate School
Skate lessons for kids! Some students from Hei 1, Hei 7 and THH are pictured here having a ball. Huge thanks to the Whitianga Skate School team!

Nurses Notes
This is a reminder that Mercury Bay Area School has an agreement with Pinnacle Midlands Health Network and Te Whatu Ora Waikato to provide free nursing services on site.
Earlier this year a letter was sent to parents / caregivers outlining the comprehensive wellbeing review for all consenting year 9 students. These assessments are carried out over the year as part of our nursing service, with the aim of improving the health of our students so that they can come to school well and able to learn.
Your student / rangatahi may or may not yet have had their wellbeing review completed by this stage, as they are seen throughout the year.
If you have previously opted off, this will not be applicable to your young person – this will already be on record. If you have questions or you would like to choose to opt off, please contact your school nurse via email nurse@mbas.ac.nz or text to 027 327 3945
Kind regards,
